Online consumer spending in the Netherlands grew 16.1 per cent last year, almost twice as fast as a year earlier (8.4 per cent). In total, web shoppers spent 16.07 billion euros on the internet last year, more than half of which was on products. That's according to the new Home Shopping Market Monitor, with results from the last quarter of 2015 and the whole of last year.

For the first time in a year, Dutch web shoppers spent more on products than on services: 8.41 billion euros versus 7.66 billion euros respectively. Online product sales, at 21.9 per cent, also grew much faster than online sales of services (10.3 per cent). Thuiswinkel.org director Wijnand Jongen points out that the growth in total retail spending is largely due to the sharp increase in product spending online.

The table below shows that over 4.7 billion euros was bought online last quarter, more than half a billion more than in the same period of 2014.
