Amazon is going to provide consumers in Berlin with their parcels within two hours. To achieve that, it is now setting up a distribution centre at Kurfürstendam, a popular shopping boulevard in Berlin. There, the 10,000 most popular items will be stored locally, enabling fast delivery.
German newspaper Die Welt writes about Amazon's new plans. However, the etailer itself would not comment on the news. According to the daily, Amazon's fast delivery service will start on 1 May. In doing so, it plans to use local couriers. This is notable because Amazon previously had parcels delivered by DHL. The local couriers will deliver to homes six days a week.
Keeping delivery in its own hands
Amazon is trying to win over consumers by delivering faster and cheaper, but would meanwhile lose billions on these delivery costs. The etailer is therefore busy setting up its own logistics system, keeping delivery in-house and reducing the need to outsource to companies such as UPS, FedEx or DHL. The etailer recently added 20 Boeing 767s to its delivery network and opened 60 hubs in or near major US cities so far, from where it delivers parcels within two hours. Through measures like these, Amazon hopes to eventually cut delivery costs.
