Zalando wants to become the 'Spotify of the fashion industry', including by taking fulfilment of items off the hands of partners. The etailer said this when announcing its preliminary figures for the first quarter.
The online player posted a 24.5 per cent increase in turnover in the first months of the year to 801 million euros. That is a lower sales increase than last year, when it still posted sales growth between 27 and 29 per cent. Zalando then spoke of its "best first quarter ever". For the full year, Zalando expects to grow by 20 to 25 per cent.
Profits would also be slightly lower than last year's first quarter. Profit was around 1.5 to 3.5 per cent of sales. A year earlier, it was 4 to 6 per cent. For the whole of 2016, Zalando is targeting a profit of 3 to 4.5 per cent of sales.
The German etailer reports that, like Amazon and bol.com, it wants to take fulfilment out of the hands of third parties. The programme is called Fulfilment by Zalando and will allow brands to ship their product through Zalando's logistics infrastructure.
