The online market share in groceries has doubled over the past year. At the beginning of 2016, seventeen per cent of Dutch households did their grocery shopping online. That writes Emerce based on figures from GfK.
A large share of online groceries was bought from non-supermarkets such as HelloFresh, Zooplus and Wijnvoordeel. Only six per cent of households made a purchase from the webshop of a supermarket chain such as Albert Heijn or Spar. In 2015, supermarkets booked 0.9 per cent of their sales online. In the first quarter of 2016, that percentage doubled.
Rather have it delivered than collected
GfK expects online supermarket spending to increase by a factor of six in the coming years. Respondents indicated that they prefer not to go out to collect their ordered groceries; they prefer to have them delivered to their homes.
'Fewer supermarkets on high street'
Last month, retail experts said on Nieuwsuur that they expect the market share of online supermarkets, including, for example, Picnic, to grow so fast in the coming years that physical branches will be forced to close their doors. In ten years' time, the Netherlands would have two hundred to four hundred fewer supermarkets than today.
