Dutch consumers bought €16.1 billion online in 2015. This places our country seventh in the top 10 European e-commerce countries, according to a report by Ecommerce Europe.
Britain, France and Germany occupy the top three largest e-commerce countries. The Netherlands scores just lower than Italy (16.6 billion euros) and higher than Denmark (11.7 billion euros).
Belgian e-commerce is growing fast
Last year, nearly 13 million Dutch consumers bought online. This does not place the Netherlands among the 10 fastest-growing countries in Europe. The top five fastest growers largely consist of Eastern European countries, including Romania and Ukraine. Belgium is also growing fast. Our southern neighbours saw 6.9 million consumers shop online. This puts Belgium in third place of the fastest growers.
2016: turnover up 12 per cent
Total European online sales amounted to €455 billion last year, up 13.9 per cent from a year earlier. Shoppers spent an average of €1540 on the web in 2015. 296 million Europeans shopped online last year. Ecommerce Europe expects the e-commerce market to grow by 12 per cent to €510 billion this year. The largest share of sales is recorded in Western Europe (€252 billion). In Central Europe, sales of 89.5 billion euros are expected.
Europe currently has 750 thousand online shops, the report estimates. This generates 250 million jobs, especially in courier companies.
