The number of
online shops in the Netherlands continues to grow. A survey by the business directory
shows that our country has now surpassed the 100,000 mark for online shops. Compared with
France and Belgium, the Netherlands actually has the highest number of online shops in relative terms.

Kompass defines online shops as businesses that sell goods online
. On average, one in eight businesses on the Dutch market
is involved in this activity. In Belgium, the figure is one in 22, and in France it is as high as
one in 25. In absolute terms, however, France performs even better, with 142,800 online shops
compared to 100,130 in the Netherlands.

Small players
According to the survey, it is mainly small businesses (with up to five
employees) are particularly active in online sales. These figures contradict the research
by Twinkle and Thuiswinkel.org. They conclude that 80 per cent of online sales
are generated by the 100 largest companies. This discrepancy
is mainly because those studies focus on B2C rather than B2B. The
the Kompass survey, B2B was also included. It is precisely the
small businesses perform well.
