Zalando will personalise its logistics system in the future. The etail giant is focusing on different shipping options that consumers can choose from. So states vice president logistics products Jan Batels to trade magazine EtailTrends.

Zalando is deploying a flexible warehouse management system to guarantee on-time delivery, despite the different delivery options it wants to offer. Moreover, such a WMS can be adapted to Zalando's own requirements, Batels states in the magazine.

The German company is currently busy developing its own logistics system. By keeping logistics in its own hands, Zalando has the ability to test and implement new services in a short period of time, something that cannot be done when logistics is outsourced. For example, the fashion retailer managed to introduce a pilot around sameday delivery within two weeks. After only four weeks, it started working on a pilot with return labels on parcels.

Fulfilment centres spread across Europe
Late last month, it was announced that Zalando is opening new fulfilment centres in France and Poland to deliver parcels to customers' homes faster. Located near Paris and the Polish city of Szczecin, the new centres should reduce delivery times by one to two days. As Zalando now serves consumers in 15 European countries, it was forced to open distribution centres outside Germany in late 2015. The etail giant now ships from three fulfilment centres in Germany and a centre in northern Italy, where the shipping time decreased by one and a half days since the opening of the fulfilment centre. Some 60 per cent of Italian orders are processed here.
