To stimulate cross-border e-commerce in Europe, parcel shipping to foreign countries must become more efficient. So says Ecommerce Europa, umbrella organisation for online retail.

According to the trade association, logistics providers currently decide for themselves how to label parcels, apply barcodes and organise electronic communication. This results in an inefficient dispatch process. “Online retailers are reluctant to sell to other EU countries because cross-border delivery is still organised inefficiently,” says Marlene ten Ham of Ecommerce Europe. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular are said to struggle with this. The organisation has drawn up a manifesto calling for workable solutions in the field of parcel delivery in Europe. These include harmonisation, parcel labels and interoperability.

The organisation hopes this will make cross-border delivery cheaper for consumers and for retailers. Ecommerce Europe's manifesto, will soon appear online.
