Supermarket discounter Lidl will open a distribution centre in Roosendaal in 2018. From the new DC, it wants Lidl to handle e-commerce activities for Europe. So writes BN de Stem.
German Lidl is mainly betting on online sales of non-food products such as sportswear and household goods. Business park Borchwerf II in Roosendaal is a suitable location for the supermarket chain due to its central location and the labour potential of the region. Earlier, Lidl preferred a plot in Bergen op Zoom, but due to long production times to change the zoning plan, it decided against it.
The new building in Roosendaal will be located on a six-hectare plot and will employ 1,200 people. Depending on the growth of e-commerce, the number of employees may be scaled up. According to property developer Delin, which is responsible for the realisation of the DC, construction will start in March or April.
Late last year, Lidl already opened a new distribution centre in Waddinxveen, which was labelled the most sustainable logistics building in the Netherlands by the Dutch Green Building Council (DGBC) before opening. From this DC, the stocks of around one hundred Lidl stores in the Randstad area are transported.
