Annual revenue for the overall transport sector may be disappointing, but at postal company DHL they don't notice much of it. In the last quarter of 2016, Deutsche Post posted a record profit of some €1.1 billion.
The period around the holidays is known as a key period for the e-commerce sector, and the parcel delivery company benefited from that. The 1.1 billion euros operating profit is more than 16 per cent more than a year earlier. This makes it the highest quarterly result in the company's history.

This brought net profit for all of 2016 to more than EUR 2.6 billion. A substantial recovery from 2015, when earnings were down 71 per cent. Major strikes and software problems were behind that year's slumped figures.
According to top executive Frank Appel, 2017 will be a year with even better results. In any case, the prospects are good: this year alone, DHL Express opened a new sorting centre in Breda, a new shop in the centre of The Hague and expanded its life science & healthcare centre in Wijchen. At the same time, the company invested 9 million euros in its new Service Centre in Utrecht.
