The number of job vacancies in the Netherlands rose by 8.8 per cent in the second quarter of 2017. Logistics proved to be the biggest driver of this growth, with a vacancy increase of a whopping 34.2 per cent.

This is according to figures from job search engine Adzuna. 21,826 jobs were released in the logistics sector last quarter. The average gross salary in the sector was 31,338 euros per year, an increase of 8.4 per cent. "The logistics sector has been doing very well in the Netherlands for some time now, in the second quarter we see that in addition to Rotterdam, there is also strong investment in additional logistics staff in Apeldoorn, Zwolle and Amersfoort," said Thomas de Schuyter, Country Manager at Adzuna. "Among other things, the new collective labour agreements ensured that employees in the sector can also expect higher salaries."

Vacancy growth for hospitality and IT sector too
Besides the strong growth in logistics, the number of vacancies in the hospitality (+23.1 per cent) and IT sectors (+15.4 per cent) also increased. Sectors that saw a decline in number of vacancies were the Sales sector with -8.1 per cent or 1,320 fewer vacancies, Industry with -1.0 per cent and the Construction sector with a slight decline of -0.2 per cent.

Salaries still not on the rise
Across the Netherlands, indicated salaries fell by a negligible -0.1 per cent. "With demand for workers continuing to rise and the number of unemployed declining, it is striking that employers currently do not have to raise salaries sharply to attract candidates," De Schuyter argues. "So currently the battle for candidates is not yet pulling up salaries in general, a trend that will most likely change when vacancies stop getting filled."
