The design and construction of new logistics space requires knowledge of fire safety. So says industry association VNCW The chemical logistics association is launching a project to 'build fire-safe logistics'.

'Board and management have hardly any knowledge of fire safety'

According to VNCW, when designing a new building or taking over an existing one, consultants are often involved, but those commercial interests of consultants play into their advice. Moreover, the final decisions are put back to the management of the company. "Choices have to be made about location, constructions and materials. In the field of fire-safe solutions, the board and management have little or sometimes no knowledge," the industry association writes on its website.

Building fire-safe logistics

Within the project 'Building fire-safe logistics', VNCW will first identify the lack of knowledge in the field of fire safety and record it in a SWOT analysis.

The industry association is organising a meeting led by experts in fire safety, including structural engineers and materials suppliers. The meeting will be open to companies in logistics and other industries, as well as governments and other interested parties. This should eventually produce an E-learning course to disseminate fire safety knowledge nationwide.
