Jumbo is switching to a new logistics model. The supermarket chain currently delivers online orders from shops, but is going to test delivery from hubs.
So says cfo Ton van Veen in an interview with Distrifood. Amsterdam and Den Bosch will serve as pilot cities for the next six months. In Den Bosch, orders for Den Bosch and Rosmalen will be delivered from the e-fulfilment hub. A second hub is currently being built in Amsterdam. From there, it will deliver online orders from Jumbo stores in the capital.
The food shop usually delivers groceries from its physical branches, which serve as transhipment points as order picking is done in Den Bosch. However, that model started to fray in terms of capacity, Van Veen told Distrifood. "We had to close time slots, for example, because the capacity was not there."
With the new model, groceries ordered online can be delivered at more times. For instance, Jumbo will also start delivering in the early hours. "Many people want to have their groceries in the morning, so we will also deliver at seven in the morning. The period in which we can deliver is also going to change. Now there is a standard time slot of three hours. We will soon go to two hours and eventually to one hour."
