The Netherlands has the best e-commerce landscape in the world. Our country has a very high percentage of online shoppers and almost everyone has a bank account. In addition, iDeal is a very popular payment method.

This is according to UNCTAD's B2C E-commerce Index, which annually rates countries on their e-commerce landscape. This looks at delivery options, the security of internet servers and the payment services present in a country.

Netherlands from fourth to first place

UNCTAD surveyed 151 markets this year. Eight countries in the top 10 are from Europe, with the Netherlands climbing from fourth to first place this year, followed by Singapore and Switzerland. Our country knocked off the throne of Luxembourg, which failed to secure a top-10 ranking this year. The quality of delivery is said to have declined in Luxembourg.

Secure servers, many webshops and online shoppers

Netherlands scored high on most indicators, especially on secure servers. Moreover, our country has many online webshops; there are more than 82 thousand webshops, of which 40 thousand are pure online players. 76 per cent of the population aged 15 years and older sometimes buys online. This gives the Netherlands the second highest share of online shoppers in the world. There is room for improvement in the area of delivery, according to UNCTAD. Late delivery of products ordered online is a major consumer complaint.
