Albert Heijn will open a fifth distribution centre for online orders this year. In the new logistics centre, the supermarket chain will process 40,000 orders weekly.
Albert Heijn already has four so-called Home Shop Centers (HSC) in the Netherlands. In Almere, Eindhoven, Rotterdam and de Meern, it handles e-commerce orders. The fifth HSC, which will cater for Albert Heijn's strong online growth, will be located in Amsterdam. The distribution centre will accommodate around 1,000 employees.

Logistics hubs for more efficient delivery
Albert Heijn says it also wants to expand the number of logistics hubs, smaller locations on the outskirts of cities. From there, delivery trucks with orders drive into the city. The supermarket chain expects to deliver more efficiently with more logistics hubs.
Albert Heijn closes Pick Up Points
Some of Albert Heijn's Pick Up Points are just closing their doors. The mass retailer also sees a growing demand for home delivery outside urban areas. As a result, it thinks it will need fewer pick-up points.
