A research team from RWTH Aachen University has designed a semi-autonomous train system for urban distribution. The so-called 'Ducktrain' consists of four electrically powered vehicles that follow a driver through the city.
Depending on the number of vehicles, the Ducktrain's transport volume is between two and eight cubic metres. The vehicles are connected to each other and to the driver via an optical system. That driver can travel on foot as well as by bicycle. In the future, the vehicles should also be able to avoid obstacles independently.

Companies can also choose to deploy the Ducktrain in their own operational environment. In a distribution centre, for example, the trains can operate fully autonomously as AGVs.
The Ducktrain was developed under the leadership of Professor Achim Kampker. He is known to a wider audience as the founder of StreetScooter, a startup that produces electric delivery vehicles. The first companies are said to have already expressed interest in further development of the Ducktrain.
