Zalando and PostNord are building a network of private collection points. In Denmark, the companies are opening 50 neighbourhood points, for example at private homes. Dutch company Homerr will manage the points network.
The three-month pilot will start in residential areas of Aarhus and Copenhagen. There, Zalando and PostNord are looking to open 50 service points run by private individuals. People who spend a lot of time at home, such as stay-at-home parents, entrepreneurs or pensioners, can offer their homes as pick-up points.
Fewer and more efficient rides
Zalando wants to promote efficiency and reduce environmental impact with the new service. Bundling the delivery of Zalando orders reduces the number of delivery addresses. This ultimately leads to fewer and more efficient trips.
"Testing is part of Zalando's DNA," says Remko Bakker, Lead Zalando Logistics Platform Services about the pilot. "We are constantly innovating and rethinking our services to offer our customers more flexibility and variety. Complementing the existing network with private collection and delivery points can bring enormous added value and customer convenience. In addition, individuals can help their community in this way by receiving parcels for neighbours and earn a penny on the side at the same time. This offers a win-win situation for both private operators and our customers."
PostNord provides transport and IT systems
PostNord already delivers in Scandinavia for Zalando. The carrier contributes to the pilot by delivering parcels to the service points. It also sets up IT systems and communication platforms for end users.
Homerr as Dutch partner
Homerr will manage the neighbourhood points network in Denmark as Zalando's Dutch partner. The start-up already works in the Netherlands with hundreds of neighbourhood points in more than 30 cities. In mid-2018, the company received a €1 million capital injection.
