Amazon requires sellers to make their packages smaller. Since this month, companies selling through Amazon have been paying $2 extra when they do not adhere to the standard.

In addition to limiting the size, Amazon requires sellers to make their packages easy to open. Ultimately, Amazon wants every product it ships to meet similar standards. In a letter to vendors, the e-commerce giant states that the new packaging requirements will make packages more environmentally friendly.

The new packaging requirements show the power Amazon has over the way vendors do business, writes the Wall Street Journal. The online retailer encourages companies to sell products in quantities and at prices that best fit Amazon's logistics systems. It also asks consumer product manufacturers to develop exclusive brands for Amazon. Companies that do not comply will not be shown on Amazon's site.
