Amazon is going to deliver in Germany with electric delivery vans. The e-commerce giant has ordered 40 vans from StreetScooter, a subsidiary of Deutsche Post.

Amazon wants to deploy the electric transport in Munich, a city that wants to be climate-neutral by 2040. Sixty charging stations have been installed at Amazon's distribution centre in Munich.

StreetScooter by Deutsche Post DHL

Car manufacturer StreetScooter started in 2010 as a spin-off of the Technischen Hochschule Aachen. The eponymous electric vans produced by StreetScooter reach a maximum speed of 80 kilometres per hour. In 2014, Deutsche Post DHL bought the manufacturer. Deutsche Post now uses 10,000 of the 12,000 StreetScooters. The startup is still writing red figures; therefore, Deutsche Post is looking for investors to help StreetScooter grow.

Amazon climate neutral in 2040

Amazon boss Jeff Bezos signed The Climate Pledge in September. Participants in this initiative promise to be climate neutral 10 years earlier than the Paris Agreement. In other words, by 2040. "We decided to use our scale to make a difference," Jeff Bezos said. "If a company like Amazon - which delivers more than 10 billion items a year - can meet the Paris Agreement ten years earlier, then any company can." Amazon aims to run eighty per cent on renewable energy from 2024. By 2030, that should be 100 per cent.
