Roadside restaurants and truck stops along motorways are indispensable for truck drivers to be able to eat, drink and shower. Branchevereniging Transport en Logistiek Nederland (TLN) therefore advocates keeping these facilities open for drivers. "These kinds of facilities are part of our country's vital infrastructure," he said.
TLN has brought the issue to the attention of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, which is now considering the request. The industry association, following yesterday's move to close all catering establishments, is pleading for an exception of catering establishments along motorways for truck drivers. They should collect food and drinks from these establishments. "After all, a driver cannot take the truck past a supermarket to buy a meal. They should also be able to freshen up along the highway and use sanitation facilities there."
With their driver card, drivers can demonstrate to employees that they belong to a vital profession, TLN said.
