The transport sector in Britain is calling for an extension of the Brexit transition period as the corona crisis consumes their full attention. The transition period lasts in principle until the end of this year.
The Freight Transport Association (FTA) has called on the government to extend the transition period. According to FTA, the sector faces a huge challenge as Covid-19 grips the country and the rest of the world. Logistics companies have to maintain the supply chain while dealing with disruptions caused by absenteeism. For some companies, operations have virtually ground to a halt and uncertainty over their viability prevails.
"Our priority is to deliver to our customers," says FTA policymaker Elizabeth de Jong. "There is simply not enough capacity available to make major structural changes before leaving the European Union." The trade association hopes that other planned legislative changes for the sector will also be shelved.
