Amazon purchases one hundred thousand electric delivery vans. Never before have so many electric vehicles been ordered. The online platform is thus taking an important step towards climate-neutral operations by 2040.

From 2022, Amazon will drive around with ten thousand electric delivery vans from manufacturer Rivian. From 2030, one hundred thousand delivery vans will be deployed.

The Climate Pledge

This was stated by top executive Jeff bezos at the signing of The Climate Pledge initiative. Participants in this initiative promise to be climate neutral ten years earlier than the Paris Agreement. In other words, by 2040.

"We decided to use our scale to make a difference," said Jeff Bezos. "If a company like Amazon - which delivers more than 10 billion items a year - can meet the Paris Agreement 10 years earlier, then any company can." Amazon aims to run eighty per cent on renewable energy from 2024. By 2030, that should be 100 per cent.

Signal to the market

According to Bezos, CEOs of other companies have also responded enthusiastically to The Climate Pledge. "Large companies signing The Climate Pledge are sending an important signal to the market that it is time to invest in the products and services that signatories need to meet their commitments," he said.
