The Westelijk Havengebied in Amsterdam will host the first circular BouwHub. The initiative by VolkerWessels and Beelen should optimise construction logistics in the inner city and significantly reduce the CO2 footprint.
VolkerWessels' circular Bouwhub will be placed on the Ankerweg in Amsterdam. The site is located by the water, allowing transport by water, and covers ten hectares, of which 2 hectares will initially be used.
The logistics hub is an initiative of VolkerWessels Bouwmaterieel and contractor Beelen. The initiative is now a white label concept, meaning that all parties, builders and suppliers will use the facilities.
BouwHub as central logistics location in the construction chain
VolkerWessels Bouwmaterieel has already gained experience with a BouwHub in Utrecht in recent years. From this hub on the outskirts of the city, the total construction chain logistics process (from supplier to construction site) is monitored and coordinated. Suppliers are unloaded without waiting times, deliveries are consolidated into daily packages and transported to the construction projects in the inner cities in the smartest way possible. This makes use of open data. Products are also prefabricated on the BouwHub. The BouwHub also serves as a car park from which construction site workers are taken to the building site.
Reuse residual materials
Beelen works as a sustainable contractor in the demolition sector. The company works with clients and partners to reuse materials and building materials released from projects. At the circular BouwHub, released waste streams are processed into new building material on site, minimising the distance material travels. People with a distance to the labour market will be trained and deployed during processing.
