Blockchain will become part of the supply chain by 2025. The technology will become part of mainstream business, predicts the Capgemini Research Institute.

The report "Does blockchain hold the key to a new age of supply chain transparency and trust?" presents an overview and analysis of leading organisations preparing themselves for blockchain. Of all the organisations implementing blockchain, the majority (87 per cent) are in the experimental phase. 10 per cent are in the pilot phase and 3 per cent are already implementing blockchain on a large scale.

2025: Mainstream business

Capgemini predicts that blockchain will become part of mainstream business by 2025, supporting supply chains worldwide. The technology can be applied to critical functions within the supply chain, such as tracking production, distribution and ensuring legal compliance.

Capgemini asked Dutch companies about their motivation to start working with blockchain. The reasons: saving costs (100 per cent), increasing revenues (93 per cent) and reducing risks (89 per cent). Concerns also exist. Companies find it difficult to establish a clear return on investment (ROI) and shape cooperation between partners. In addition, regulation and privacy is a challenge for the frontrunners.
