Cybercrime is the biggest threat ever to the logistics sector, says TLN to BNR Nieuwsradio. The industry organisation is receiving more and more reports about hacked trucks, ships, distribution software, digital notes of lading and other systems.

According to Arthur van Dijk, president of TLN, logistics is vulnerable due to the large amount of data used. "A logistics company used to have everything in one hand: goods, information, money. In logistics, there are three main flows: the goods themselves, their transport, and especially data, and money. As that data becomes increasingly important, those three main flows can be more easily manipulated. Globally, that data is leading to flow of goods around the world, and therefore more vulnerable."

'You are being broken into without knowing it'

According to Van Dijk, companies often realise too late that they have been broken into remotely. "You don't see that a window has actually been broken open. It happens in a way you don't notice. Before you know it, you're in the middle of it."

Responsibility

The industry organisation argues that SMEs in particular do not always have their security in order. For example, some systems are unnecessarily connected to the internet. According to Vak Dijk, companies need to take data seriously. "You not only have your own data, but also those of customers. With that, you have responsibility. As an entrepreneur, you can outsource many things but you remain responsible. Your customer can also hold you liable if it turns out you haven't taken the right security measures."
