Back in February, the plug was pulled on Google Glass, but now the company is again working on a new pair of smart glasses to conquer the business market.
Focusing on the consumer market turned out not to be a good choice for Google. Consumers had concerns about privacy and about the face when wearing the Google Glass. The new version of the smart glasses focuses entirely on the business market and thus bears the name Google Glass Enterprise. This variant looks more like normal glasses and is foldable.
Google Glass in the warehouse
Google sees greater potential in the business market. The smart glasses can significantly speed up and simplify certain processes. There are also numerous possibilities for Google Glass in the logistics sector. The smart glasses can ensure more efficient operations within the warehouse. For example, Google Glass can be used for cross-docking, order picking, parcel delivery, stock management, maintenance, and the monitoring and management of returns. Employees keep their hands free when using the smart glasses and can therefore work more quickly.
Battery life
However, the problem so far has been battery life. Google Glass only lasted for about two hours. Not very practical for a warehouse, which is often in operation 24 hours a day. In addition, the high purchase price is a barrier for many companies. An extra pair of glasses is therefore not really an option. The company now says it is set to significantly extend the battery life.
Not for all businesses
Google now plans to sell the glasses exclusively through certified Glass for Work partners to ensure that the right companies are using them.
