The number of connected devices in logistics is going to be big. "Previously, tracking assets such as trailers, roll containers and pallets was not profitable due to high costs and short battery life of a device, but due to developments in the ICT field, tracking and tracing all kinds of assets is suddenly possible." Jasper Kuin, Manager IoT Academy, a foundation co-founded by KPN, gives us an insight into the possibilities of Internet of Things (IoT) for logistics companies during ICT & Logistiek.

If a company isn't doing anything about IoT yet, you're missing the boat. So seems to be the credo. "I believe that of all the technology trends happening now, the Internet of Things is the biggest. It will lead to disruption and new business opportunities in transport and logistics," Kuin believes. Companies do have ears for Internet of Things, according to the Manager IoT Academy, but they often do not yet deploy it.

That's not strange either because before, the technology wasn't ready to make this possible. With IoT, it can."

Among companies, meanwhile, the realisation is growing that they too need to get started with IoT, although the question often remains how to shape it. KPN therefore set up the Internet of Things Academy, to work with companies from the idea phase to the pilot phase. "There has to be a dilemma, a frustration or just a new business opportunity that you think you can solve with IoT," he says. This often involves asset tracking. Another important aspect is preventive maintenance of machines, which IoT itself will indicate when maintenance is needed." As an example, Kuin cites a project with the HR Group, provider of traffic concepts, which is responsible for hanging and maintaining roadside traffic signs. "They have to keep an eye on whether the signs are not slanted. If you make every traffic sign smart by putting a sensor on it, you will be much more efficient."

At trade fair ICT&Logistics, Jasper Kuin will give the lecture Internet of Things, have you seen my assets, in Theatre 5. In this lecture, Kuin will discuss several customer cases, highlighting the customer demand, the solution and the road to the solution. Would you like to attend?
