Secure Logistics - supplier of identity and access systems in the logistics sector - has been certified as an iSHARE Identity Provider during ICT & Logistics 2019. From today, organisations can use Secure Logistics' identity tools to identify themselves anywhere within the iSHARE network. By doing so, they save time and costs.
Per day, Secure Logistics performs more than 40,000 verifications. This includes drivers who report to a terminal with a CargoCard to pick up a container, but also employees who access locations with a PortKey or Digital Safety Passport "Our identity and access management systems are now at 84 locations, not only in Rotterdam but spread throughout the Netherlands and for the past two years also in Germany and Belgium," says Cor Stolk, general director of Secure Logistics.
Verification takes place via biometrics, among other things. A driver coming to collect a container can identify himself with the CargoCard and must then place his finger in a finger scanner. If the unique vein pattern in the finger matches the one on the CargoCard, the driver is allowed to drive through. "In total, we have 40,000 cards in circulation. These include CargoCards, PortKeys and Digital Safety Passports. We register about a hundred different certificates and training that show that the holder has the required safety training and instructions to be allowed access to petrochemical plants, for example."
Reusing identities with iSHARE
iSHARE offers the opportunity to deploy the 40,000 identities captured by Secure Logistics on a much larger scale. Stolk cites the example of a chemical company that receives drivers of tankers. "That company can use iSHARE to securely and reliably verify the driver's identity with Secure Logistics without necessarily having to install a fingerprint scanner. This allows the chemical company to easily check whether that driver has the required papers to operate the filling plant. That no longer needs to be checked and validated manually," says Stolk.
Verification of identities can therefore also be done without finger scanners, agrees Stolk. "With biometrics, we achieve the very highest level of security, but this is not required everywhere. Our cards also have a unique identifier attached to them, which is sufficient in many locations. By implementing iSHARE, even without biometrics we can determine with great certainty who the driver is and what he is and is not allowed to do. In this way, we increase the added value of our solutions."
Guarded car parks
iSHARE also offers benefits for cardholders. They will soon be able to access more systems at many more than the current locations with one digital identity, but also log in at Portbase and Rijkswaterstaat, for example. "Also think about access to guarded parking spaces. Compare it to your bank card. Anyone with a Rabobank debit card can also access ABN Amro and ING ATMs."
As an iSHARE identity provider, Stolk hopes companies in the Netherlands will soon start using the arrangement system. The more companies participate, the greater the benefits. "Paper doesn't get us very far these days. The logistics sector is lagging behind in digitalisation. If we now start implementing the appointment system first, nothing will stand in our way of catching up quickly."
iSHARE proof digital identity makes it easier to share data
Gerard van der Hoeven, chairman of the iSHARE Foundation underlines the importance of Secure Logistics' certification for the further development of iSHARE. "We are very happy about Secure Logistics joining iSHARE. Secure Logistics has a long history of facilitating secure access to locations in the port of Rotterdam and far beyond. Great that they are now bringing their services from the physical domain to the digital domain as well. With Secure Logistics' admission to the iSHARE appointment system, it will be easier for logistics parties who use Secure Logistics' 'iSHARE proof' digital identities to share data with other parties to access their online service."
