Transport prices fell in the third quarter of this year compared to a quarter earlier. This is according to the Transport Market Monitor (TMM) by Capgemini Consulting and Transporeon

Summer slump
Transport prices fell mainly due to a sharp summer slump in August. However, September was a good month, meaning that the decline in the third quarter was ultimately limited to 0.6 per cent. Transport prices also fell by 0.6 per cent compared with the same quarter in 2013.

Prices have been falling in August for years
“For the past three years, August has seen a clear dip in transport prices,” says Erik van Dort, Supply Chain Director at Capgemini. “What is striking, however, is that the price was significantly lower than in the past five years, whilst capacity remained the same.”

Market demand outweighs diesel prices
Van Dort reports a strong recovery in September. With an index of 102.4, the highest level of the year was reached. According to Peter Förster, Managing Director at Transporeon, this rise is remarkable. “The diesel price index currently stands at 101.0, having reached its lowest point this year. This shows that other factors, such as strong market demand, are currently having a greater influence on the trend in transport prices than diesel prices.”
