From 6 April, truck drivers in England will be allowed to press the accelerator harder. This is when the speed limit for freight traffic in England and Wales goes up.

Currently, the speed limit on carriageways (one lane in each direction) is still 40 miles (64 km) per hour and on dual carriageways (two lanes) it is 50 miles (80 km). These speed limits are to be increased to 50 miles (80 km) and 60 miles (96 km) per hour respectively.

Speed difference between cars and trucks
The difference in speed between cars and trucks will narrow as a result. Now this speed difference on carriageways is more than 30 kilometres per hour. In some cases, local authorities may decide to deviate from these speeds. This is then indicated on signs. In Scotland and Northern Ireland, the current speed limit will remain.
