A first self-driving truck is also taking to the public roads in the US. The honour for that comes to German manufacturer Daimler.

Daimler expects to see self-driving trucks on the roads on a daily basis by 2025. For now, however, the manufacturer is sticking to two trucks. These have been approved for public roads by the state of Nevada.

Thanks to radar sensors, stereo cameras and distance controllers, the trucks do not need to be driven by drivers. However, that does not mean no drivers are needed. In fact, they are still present in the trucks, to manage overtaking and entering and exiting the motorway. If something goes wrong with the autopilot, the driver can always take control.

Daimler previously tested the self-driving cars in Magdeburg, Germany. There, however, part of the highway was closed. Since the US is more lenient in testing the vehicles, Daimler decided to continue testing there.
