This coming Saturday, the Tour de France will set off from Utrecht
. This is a massive operation for the City of Utrecht, particularly
in terms of logistics. Around 800,000 visitors are expected in the city between 1 and 5 July.
Preparations are in full swing. LogistiekProfs.nl has captured the work taking place in Utrecht
on camera. We’ve put together a selection of logistical facts and
photos for you below.

  • The
whole logistics operation in Utrecht may cost a fair bit, but the event also brings in some revenue. The event
is reportedly set to bring in around 34 million euros. The
the hospitality sector stands to benefit from this, but shops and transport companies can also
    capitalise on it.
  • The Grand Depart organisers will have a headquarters
covering no less than 6,000 square metres and a press centre with
    a capacity of 500 people.
  • Five traffic lights, 21 traffic islands/middle conductors and a handful of traffic signs, bollards and ANWB signs have been removed. The traffic lights were put in barrels so that they could be easily moved just before the Tour started.
  • XPO Logistics has been the official logistics partner of the Tour de France for many years. The company is using its new XPO Logistics lorries for this purpose. You can recognise the lorries by their distinctive red colour, featuring the slogan: #WEAREXPO

  • Bicycles are available on the event site to enable staff to get around easily. Meanwhile, many bicycles have also been removed in the run-up to the tour. A total of 600 bicycles were removed from along the route. “Bicycles parked right next to, or even on, the route could pose a danger to visitors,” according to the council.

Nevertheless, Utrecht remains cycle-friendly even during the Tour. Visitors wishing to watch the Grand Depart on Saturday can simply come by bike. There are around 40,000 cycle parking spaces available.

  • The Dutch company Movico is responsible for all
finish locations during the Tour de France. To do so, it will be travelling around France for over three weeks with 18 lorries
and 35 staff members, travelling around France for just over three weeks.
