Trucks driving behind each other to form a train cause quite a few safety problems. That is the conclusion of the ANWB. The organisation asked members for solutions to column formation. It found that road users think that stricter checks should be made on keeping distance. TLN, on the other hand, thinks that the overtaking ban should be adjusted.

Depending on traffic intensity
Transport en Logistiek Nederland expects the lifting of overtaking bans for trucks to have a positive effect on convoy formation. The organisation wants overtaking bans to be made dependent on traffic intensity. It also advocates making the current insertion lanes longer.

Extra lane
ANWB thinks an extra lane could also help solve train formation. Certainly the A67, A15 A1 and A16 would be at their maximum capacity regarding traffic flow and road safety. With an extra lane, the ban on overtaking could be lifted and more dynamic traffic would be created.

Overtaking ban
Since 2003, overtaking has been prohibited for trucks on a large part of Dutch motorways. In recent years, many motorways have been widened to three or more lanes, so there is no longer a ban on overtaking. On the above roads, this should also start to apply as soon as an additional lane is realised.
