There are a huge number of interested drivers for the two thousand new jobs offered by the new Transport and Logistics Sector Plan. The sector plan offers jobseekers who want to become drivers a diploma, including a job guarantee after obtaining that diploma.
In recent days, the Transport and Logistics Sector Institute organised the first two information meetings on the programme. Many interested people attended these. "The overwhelming interest confirms that we are on the right track and can give the sector a powerful boost," said Willem de Vries, director of Sector Institute Transport and Logistics. "It is great to see that so many people are interested in the profession of driver."
Information meetings will be organised at the following locations in the coming weeks:
14 December in Amersfoort.
11 January in Eindhoven
14 January in Zevenaar
18 January in Breda
25 January in Barendrecht
28 January in Apeldoorn
Demand for drivers
The sector plan responds to the rapidly changing labour market. Drivers who become unemployed are helped to find new jobs and jobseekers from other sectors are trained to become drivers. "We are in a tipping point in the labour market," explains Arthur van Dijk, general chairman at TLN. "On the one hand, the effects of the economic crisis are still visible through bankruptcy and redundancies. On the other hand, in some regions there is already more demand for staff and even scarcity."
Ageing
The plan to help drivers find jobs was drawn up earlier this year by Social Affairs Minister Asscher in cooperation with social partners from the transport industry. The campaign should attract young people, as the sector is experiencing considerable ageing. Many drivers will retire in the coming years, causing a shortage of drivers at a large number of companies.
