To ensure the safety of drivers at Calais, TLN wants the French army to enforce in the area. Drivers and the sector are experiencing a lot of trouble from migrants trying to cross to the UK. This would not only harm the sector, there is also a risk of psychological and physical complaints among drivers.
The problems around Calais would cost the transport sector up to 150 million euros, TLN says. Moreover, violence towards drivers is the order of the day. Migrants become frustrated as the chances of getting to the UK diminish. On Thursday 17 December, TLN is therefore consulting with the authorities in Calais to take additional measures to ensure public order, safety and flow. This should be done through the deployment of the army.

Companies accredited by the UK Border Force should also enjoy an improved check-in and control procedure. They will then spend less time checking against intruders in trucks. "It would be good to reward these companies for their efforts with a 'fast lane' similar to what you see when checking into an aircraft," believes TLN president Arthur van Dijk. "Various authorities need to integrate their controls for this. It would be nice if we can take another step in that on Thursday."
