Amsterdam will still be around three hundred logistics workers short in the coming year. The Parool reports. In 2016, the number of jobs in the storage and transport sector will rise slightly. Logistics jobs include jobs at Schiphol Airport, flower handling in Aalsmeer and city distribution.

In this regard, Amsterdam is no different from other regions in the Netherlands. The sectors that could be more boosted in the coming years are the professions in logistics, engineering, storage and transport. The reasons are mainly because old employees are retiring or because the sectors are on the rise again after the financial crisis.

High unemployment
According to Het Parool, the Amsterdam port could well use a good push, also solving the unemployment problem of Nieuw-West. There is high unemployment among young people in that area of the city. Workplaces should be made more attractive so that young people would like to work in the port. Currently, it mainly employs workers who are not from Amsterdam.

Port is not sexy
According to Achmed Baâdoud, district administrator of Nieuw-West, Schiphol is extremely popular for new employees, but lacks the necessary sex appeal. "The port is not sexy enough," Baâdoud informs the daily. And that while the port area offers many opportunities. According to the director, education has a clean job to do in making the port more attractive. Teachers should talk more positively about port work and clearly communicate the opportunities. "Let the ROCs sit on those edges of the business park and residential areas. And business should matter more: what kind of workers do they need? I really only see opportunities in this area."
