Spain has decided to switch to allowing longer and heavier vehicles. That decision has been published in Spain's Royal Decree and means that combinations, known as LPVs for short, will soon be allowed to enter Spanish roads. Longer and heavier vehicles are 25.25 metres long and weigh up to 60 tonnes. An ordinary truck has a length of up to 18.75 metres.

The law will take effect soon, but in Spain, legislative changes are not final until they are published in the Spanish Official Gazette. Until then, truck drivers must wait or hold a licence. An additional condition that will be included in the law is that LPVs cannot carry hazardous materials.

European rules
Traffic in European countries normally has a 40-tonne limit. When a truck combination goes over this weight, it is considered exceptional transport and requires a permit.

Other European countries
In Sweden and Finland, trucks are allowed to weigh 60 tonnes and have a maximum length of 25.25 metres. Our country held a trial between 2004 and 2006 and decided at the end of the trial that LPVs weighing up to 50 tonnes were allowed on the Dutch road network.
