Products ordered online are often packed in boxes that are far too big. That is the main conclusion from a survey of 5,000 packaging professionals. Respondents observe that online shops still put orders in boxes that are too big.

Visitors to packaging fair Empack were asked about trends, frustrations, future and innovations within the packaging industry. Respondents were satisfied with the increase in environmentally friendly packaging. Also, the packaging process is said to be a lot more sustainable these days.

Online retailers pack too big
Especially in online retail, there are still big steps to be taken when it comes to packaging, as more than one in three packaging professionals are annoyed by the use of oversized packaging. In this sector, online retailers send the products in large boxes, with a lot of filling material so that the articles do not slide and get damaged. It is high time to change this, according to the respondents. "It is a thing of the past that a pencil is sent in a box measuring 40 by 40 by 40 centimetres," was one of the reactions. According to 37 per cent of those surveyed, this is a problem that can easily be solved.

The survey was conducted among 5000 visitors to packaging fair Empack. This packaging fair is being organised this year from 12 to 14 April at the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht.
