Online retailer Bol.com has been awarded. Even before opening, Bol.com's distribution centre in Waalwijk has already received the BREAAM-NL New Construction & Renovation Outstanding design certificate. The distribution centre is the most sustainable in the Netherlands. Construction of the centre started last February.

Bol.com receives the award because the newly built distribution centre is extremely sustainable. This includes the use of wind turbines located next to the centre for energy supply. The building is completely CO2-neutral, partly achieved through the use of heat and cold storage in combination with heat pumps. "Our mission is to contribute to the circular economy by making the built environment more sustainable. Bol.com, as an end-user, takes responsibility for making an important contribution to this," Dutch Green Building Council director Annemarie van Doorn reveals. "Especially with a building of 130,000 square metres."

Installations
The installations used by Bol.com in the distribution centre are energy-efficient. Another motivation for awarding the certificate to the company is the innovation of using collected rainwater to flush toilets and urinals. Employees who come by electric car, scooter or bicycle can also recharge them. Animals have also been considered by creating nesting boxes for various bird species, heated bat setts and solitary bee hives, among others.

Construction
Construction of the distribution centre started last February and will take about a year. During construction, the environment is taken into account as much as possible by, among other things, separating waste and consciously choosing environmentally friendly materials.
