Cheese processing company Vonku is moving into Neckermann's former shipping centre in Sint Jansteen. The 27,000-square-metre building had stood empty since Neckermann's bankruptcy in 2014.
Two hundred employees in Sint Jansteen lost their jobs in that bankruptcy. In its heyday, Neckermann still offered work to some 800 people in the region. After the bankruptcy, the Hulst municipal council therefore expressed its 'shock'. It spoke of a 'more than unfortunate case, both for the staff and for the economic activity in the region'.
A new owner was not found in recent years until Vonku came forward. Vonku's presence from 1 July should create some 50 additional jobs. The new employees will mainly be involved in logistics work.
