Amazon still makes little use of courier services like DHL in Berlin. The US etail giant says it delivers ninety per cent of parcels ordered online in the city itself.

Amazon has had a transshipment centre on the outskirts of Berlin since last week, from where it distributes orders to local courier services that Amazon works with: companies like Go! Logistics and Interkep. The big courier companies are not involved, Krautreporter.de writes. Each courier driving for Amazon has to keep track and report to the system when a consumer is usually home or not, to reduce the chances of a closed door.

Amazon is testing its own delivery method for now. Fifteen vehicles currently drive around Berlin, delivering to the door six days a week. Next year, the etailer expects to expand in the city.

Delivery network
Amazon's growing delivery network has occupied minds for some time. The American company seems to want to be less dependent on external carriers by keeping logistics in its own hands. Earlier this year, it was announced that Amazon wanted to lease aircraft in order to take care of air transport itself. It also announced that it wanted to invest in sea freight.
