Dutch start-up CocoPallet has found a gap in the Asian market when it comes to pallets. From waste from the coconut industry, the company makes affordable transport pallets.
As Asian countries need a lot of certified export pallets, but have limited access to softwood, they are often forced to import large quantities of wood from the Baltic States, New Zealand and Siberia, among others.
By using naturally occurring glues in the coconut bark, it is able to bind the waste materials. Environmentally harmful glues are thus unnecessary. It also keeps the price low, allowing CocoPallet to compete with other existing pallet companies.
There are other sustainable factors to the product. It avoids unnecessary logging and transport of wood. The company's ambition is to go live this year and produce and sell 5 million CocoPallets by 2018.
