Amazon has flown its own cargo plane for the first time. The Boeing 737-300, named Amazon One, is one of forty aircraft that will carry goods between its various distribution centres in the United States.

The aircraft flew from new York to Seattle on Thursday. More flights will follow this weekend. By using its own aircraft, Amazon hopes to be less dependent on external carriers such as UPS and FedEx. Especially around the busy holiday season, parcels were sometimes delivered late by the companies. With its own fleet, Amazon wants to keep delivery times under its own control.

Yet Amazon is not completely saying goodbye to third-party carriers. Recently, Mike Glenn, executive vice president of FedEx indicated that Amazon will continue to be a larger customer of the company in the future. "In any case, we know that Amazon will continue to make full use of the FedEx portfolio in fiscal year 2017," Glenn said.
