Trade organisations EVO and Transport en Logistiek Nederland are advising drivers to pay extra close attention in Italy. In the country, refugees are said to often try to hitchhike via trucks, creating unsafe situations for stowaways and drivers. Moreover, it often leads to damage to loads.
The organisations say they have received several signals about unsafe situations in Europe. There was already much to do in Calais about refugees trying to cross to Britain via trucks, but in the border areas of Italy too, drivers would do well to carry out extra checks on their vehicles.
Parking against each other
EVO and TLN advise drivers to look for guarded parking areas and park trucks with the doors against each other at night or during rest. Using an enclosed body also makes it more difficult to enter the trucks. The organisations advise transport operators to educate drivers on how best to act when a stowaway situation does occur.
