Supermarket chain Albert Heijn has substantially remodelled and expanded its distribution centre for groceries ordered online. The so-called Home Shop Center is now twice as big as before, also significantly increasing the number of orders the DC can process.

Albert Heijn is trying to capitalise on the growing market for online groceries with the expansion. The distribution centre in de Meern, which will be officially taken into use from next week, now has a floor area of 10,800 square metres. It can process and ship 25,000 orders a week, doubling its current capacity. The Home Shop Center features a new production hall and a new 3,000-square-metre cold store. This allows Albert Heijn to significantly expand its fresh range.

Albert Heijn processes online orders, in addition to its distribution centre in De Meern, from its distribution centres in Rotterdam and Almere. About 500 employees work in De Meern. With the expansion of the DC, Albert Heijn is creating an additional 200 jobs.
