Employees at Bax-shop are dissatisfied with working conditions in the warehouse. Former employees have complained to CNV Vakmensen about long working days, unpaid overtime and dangerous working conditions.
Omroep Zeeland spoke to former employees of Bax-shop and CNV Vakmensen. According to Kitty Huntjens of CNV, staff are aggressively forced to work overtime. Moreover, those hours are not paid. "Packages are moved against health and safety rules at great heights and with danger for the workers," Huntjens said. A former employee argues that staff have to lift much more than is responsible. "Even driving a forklift without a driving licence is deadly normal," said a former employee.
Earlier this month, a strike at Bax-shop's warehouse cost 11 employees dearly. The warehouse workers decided to lay down their work at night out of dissatisfaction with the many night shifts they had to work. According to the employees, the management had unilaterally decided that the inbound department had to work full-time during night shifts indefinitely. The warehouse manager wrote in an e-mail to the employees that he felt quite let down. In doing so, he also wrote that the employees were being rostered out. This was possible because the employees had zero hours contracts through temporary employment agency Rapaat Logistics BV. After a personal interview, the employees would be allowed to return.
In a written response, Bax-shop let it know that it is surprised that Omroep Zeeland is taken aback by former employees making negative comments about the working atmosphere within the company. "Bax-shop does not recognise itself in the reproaches and statements made. For Bax-shop, the more than 400 employees are of value. They help make the company's growth possible. The company knows it depends on driven employees with resilience. Bax-shop looks forward to the consultations with CNV with confidence."
