Hauliers and logistics service providers experienced a positive third quarter. They experienced higher than expected activity, according to the TLN business survey. They are also confident in the fourth quarter, mainly thanks to a well-filled order book.

The quarterly survey of sentiment among entrepreneurs in the transport and logistics sector shows that activity remained the same as in the second quarter of 2016. This was better than many entrepreneurs had expected. Among themselves, industries showed large differences. For instance, the third quarter was relatively quiet for companies in international general cargo transport, agricultural transport and container transport. Activity was higher for companies in conditioned transport and live animal transport.

More than 42 per cent of respondents said they were confident about the future. This is mainly due to the well-filled order book for the fourth quarter of this year. Point of attention, however, remains the price level. A small increase in prices can be seen, but it is still not keeping pace with growing activity. Profits therefore lag behind the level of sales for many companies.

TLN advises entrepreneurs to invest in digitalisation despite lagging profits. Only in this way can logistics Netherlands maintain its position in Europe. This could include the use of digital waybills and exchange of e-invoices, but also other routes that lead to efficiency.
