Supermarket chain Jumbo wants to become an online market leader and is therefore building an automated national distribution centre in Nieuwegein. Construction is due to be completed in 2020.

At the end of this year, Jumbo will start construction of the new DC on the De Liesbosch industrial estate in Nieuwegein. The building will stand on a 200,000-square-metre plot and will cover some 43,000 square metres. Jumbo will pay some 100 million euros for the realisation of the warehouse.

The supermarket chain's goal is to become the market leader in online grocery shopping. To do so, Jumbo needs a centrally located distribution centre. Initially, the DC is intended for supplying the physical branches, later e-fulfilment activities will be added. The supermarket's national distribution centre is currently located in Elst. Jumbo eventually wants to move all logistics activities to Nieuwegein. The DC in Elst will close in 2020, but it is still unclear what this will mean for the employees in the current DC.

In an interview with Out.of.Home Shops, cfo Ton van Veen states that Jumbo currently derives 1.5 to 2 per cent of its sales from online sales. The supermarket chain expects the online sales share to grow to 5 per cent in the coming years.
