Online grocery delivery service Picnic
served more than five times as many customers with their groceries in 2016. The number of customers
rose from 4,300 to 24,000 in the space of a year.

Picnic’s 2016 operational review shows
that the number of the company’s electric delivery vans has risen to eighty.
Initially, there were just eight. The delivery vans covered a total of 359 thousand
kilometres.

Picnic has also expanded into a number of new cities. For example,
it has been delivering to Utrecht, Maarssen and Almere since last year. The start-up
is now active in six cities. It plans to expand significantly next year, aiming to
cover ten to fifteen new cities. Picnic will continue to focus on medium-sized
towns. According to the delivery service, it is interested in cities such as
Apeldoorn, Gouda, Lelystad and Zoetermeer.

Earlier, Picnic revealed that it will open a new distribution centre next year. The online super now has a distribution centre in Nijkerk, from which local hubs are supplied. From these transfer points, electric trolleys drive into neighbourhoods to deliver groceries to customers. Picnic founder Michiel Muller thought the distribution centre in Nijkerk would suffice in terms of capacity for at least three years. However, just one year after its establishment, the online supermarket felt compelled to build an extra floor on top of the DC. This extra floor is not all. A new distribution centre should accelerate expansion into new cities. It is still unclear which location Picnic has in mind for this.
