Supplier Mediq has started construction of a 'state-of-the-art' distribution centre in Bleiswijk. Four Mediq distribution centres are moving to the new distribution centre, which will cover an area of 20,000 square metres.

From early 2018, Mediq will handle distribution to indirect and direct customers in the Benelux from a single ominchannel warehouse at the Prisma Bedrijvenpark. The building will allow the medical devices and healthcare solutions provider to house 20,000 items.

WDP and VDR Bouwgroep are responsible for the construction of the new distribution centre. The mechanisation is in the hands of technology company KNAP, which is supplying a zone picking system and shuttle workstations. The warehouse will be partly equipped with pallet racks for order picking. According to Mediq, this way of working shortens order production time and increases delivery reliability. "Through this investment, we realise higher efficiency levels in storage, inventory management and transport," said Mediq managing director Vincent Weijers. "We will also be able to use our employees and mechanisation optimally." These improvements are of great value, according to Mediq, given the strong price pressure in the healthcare market.

The building will be built in accordance with BREAAM sustainability requirements. 1,500 square metres of the area will be devoted to office space and special activities such as custom-made solutions. A 4,000-metre mezzanine floor will allow service activities to be carried out.
